Our new hand built bed

We ordered a new memory foam mattress recently because our old one was very much on it’s way out. We decided after two years of marriage we needed an actual bed, instead of laying the mattress on the floor! In addition to generally being more comfortable, Lauren will really need the extra height after a minor surgery to make it easier to get in and out of bed. I decided to build one instead of buying because nothing I could find for under $200 looked worth the money. I designed it in Google SketchUp in about 6 hours and we got the wood for about $70, pus a couple dozen screws and wood glue I already had. It took me three days to finish it, maybe 12-14 hours of work. It worked out better than any project I have done before because I did the design in Sketchup, which allowed me to see all the pieces put together in 3 dimensions and see any problems ahead of time, as well as being able to print dimensioned shop drawings and cutting diagrams.

The first cut for removing some waste out of a large large joint. Since it was stopped (not going all the way to other side of the board) and the saw blade is curved, after cutting out to the line with the table saw I had to remove the rest with a chisel. This bed involved some of my first real chisel joints. The second picture is partway through the chiseling, the third is how the joint fits, and the last is the other part of the joint (done on the table saw).

Final assembly of the bed and finally getting the mattress set up and bed made. Also, Baelli had do the final quality control testing; she approves.

Turning a niddy noddy

Today I finished up a “niddy noddy” for Lauren. The niddy noddy is a tool for winding yarn in to a skein.

A video of me turning can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a_KGGVxJSg (turn down your sound!)

Rat update

Our rats are getting so big!

One rat we named Velcro because he will hang onto your hand if you turn it upside down, and the other is Mr. Spot because he has a spot on his tummy.

We gave the ratties a bath and moved them into the larger cage, since they are getting so big!

Sheep!

The lambs in the field in front of our driveway came to see me when I stopped on my way out to drop off trash.

Squash!

We went to an Orchard/farm market on the way back from work. They had a fantastic deal on a bulk box of seconds summer squash; dealing with all this squash is going to take forever!

Wild Rasberries

About the time our Mulberries gave out we found wild Raspberries growing beside our long driveway. The Raspberries have been even more prolific!

Impressive stove

I found a multi thousand dollar stove at the habitat restore that I want one like eventually, a professional Viking range:

Ratties!

Lauren came into town with me today and we went to lunch. After lunch she just wanted to go for a walk around the stores near the restaurant. We just happened to conveniently go into Petco >_>

She convinced me, both her cuteness and the cuteness of the critters, to buy 2 new pets πŸ˜€

Status of the garden

Our garden is doing really well, except for something getting in and eating our only strawberry plants and the blossoms off our only squash plant.

We have tomatoes well on their way, many many of them. I thought the first 10 plants I got froze, so I bought 10 more, then the first 10 survived! We will soon have a huge amount of tomatoes!

We went to Southern States (a farm/garden supply store) today and picked up some plants 50% off. I got 2 sweet basil, 1 purple basil, 2 cucumber, a sweet red cherry pepper and 2 watermelon.
